Dr. Doris Day's 10 Skin Care Tips

1. Sun protection

I call it daylight protection. It is now well understood that both UVA and UVB rays are damaging to skin, that the damage is cumulative, and most of it occurs slowly over time, not just from going to the beach. UVA also goes through glass, so use a broad spectrum sunscreen every day, all year round.

2. You don't need the sun for vitamin D

Only the first step of vitamin D production occurs in the skin. After that it goes to the liver and then the kidneys before you end up with the most active form of vitamin D that your body needs. You get plenty of the type of vitamin D that your skin makes, from the foods that you eat- especially the fortified cereals and milk that are available.

3. Start your day with a bowl of antioxidants

Start every day with fresh bluberries, strawberries or rasberries. They taste great and are great for your skin.

4. Drink plenty of water

Your skin needs the hydration. If your body is dehydrated, your skin will be sacrificed and will sag and look sallow. I love making myself a pitcher of water, adding slices of cucumber, orange, lemon, or other fruit, and letting it sit in the fridge overnight. It tastes great and makes it a pleasure to drink more.

5. Spice up your life

Spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, curry- are not only tasty, they are great for you. Use them more and less salt. Most people get too much salt in their diet and this makes the face puffy, especially the more delicate skin around the eyes.

6. Relax your face

Most people make faces all day long without intending to or even realizing it. The expressions lead to wrinkles over time, especially combined with sun exposure and other toxins. There are great ways to easily relax your expressions and strengthen the muscles that bring your face up instead of down.

7. Breathe

It is amazing what the power of oxygen can do for your skin. every day, take a minute to take a few slow deep breaths and relax.

8. Have a great skin care routine

remember to wash with the proper cleanser- not soap, exfoliate on a regular basis, moisturize and use sunscreen every day. It takes only a few moments and the difference can take years off.

9. Speak with your Dermatologist about the latest rejuvenating treatments

This can jump start you on your way to younger,  healthier skin. Treatments such as Botox, fillers, lasers can turn back the clock and help it stay there when you combine them with a healthy routine.

10. Think good thoughts

A happy outlook and a good belly laugh makes your skin glow.
